Police and UK Registry work towards greater powers to close down sites

Nominet, the .uk registry, and the UK police are looking for greater powers to be able to shut down domains in response to requests from the law enforcement agencies.

"The changes will mean that if Nominet is given "reasonable grounds to believe [domains] are being used to commit a crime" it will remove them from the .uk registry."

This can either be seen as open to abuse for censorship, or as a positive step to shutdown web-based scams (of which we have been aware of at least two this week). Personally, I prefer to see it as the latter.

Dominos .es is responsible for managing the Internet Domain Names Registry for the country code ".es".

Dominos tasks include everything from assigning new domains to processing applications.

Dominos is a part of the business entity Red.es. To register a domain, Red.es recommend to contact the assigned registrars. They only offer direct registration under special circumstances due to special conditions and it should be noted that this procedure is more expensive.

Anyone can apply for any of the following ".es" domains, it does not matter from where in the world the application is sent. The only criteria to registrate, is to maintain ties to Spain.

Your ".es" domain will be assigned on a first come, first served basis - the first to apply for a domain will obtain the assignation. You should also remember that:

It must not be included in the list of prohibited words.

It must not be included in the list of reserved words.

It cannot have already been assigned.

It must comply with the rules of syntax.

".es" has a number of second-level domains. Among them it is possible to freely apply for any of the following:

".es" To identify a company, organisation or name on the Internet, for example wouldthissuityou.es ".com.es" for low cost activities, for example, concert.com.es Note that individuals, legal entities and organisations without legal entity with ties to Spain may still apply for any ".com.es" or ".es" domain. ".nom.es", for a name, example juliangibbs.nom.es ".org.es" for an organisation, for example, charity.org.es

Entities, institutions or groups, with or without legal entity, that are non-profit making and have ties to Spain may register ".org.es" domains. For ".nom.es" domains, legal entities and individuals with ties to Spain may apply.

There are other second-level domains that has certain requirments, ".gob.es" and ".edu.es" provide public institutions and bodies and institutions in the field of research and education within Spain with an Internet identity. These domains require prior verification and take a maximum of 24 hours to be registered. ".gob.es" domains are reserved for the Public Law entities and Spanish Public Administrations. Reserved for governmental bodies, for example ministry.gob.es ".edu.es" if you are an officially recognised educational organisation, for Entities, institutions and groups, with or without legal entity, that are officially recognised and undertake activities related to education or research in Spain may obtain ".edu.es" domains. Example, xxxschool.edu.es

If you believe that you have initial rights to a ".es" domain name that has already been assigned, you can use the Extrajudicial Conflict Resolution System and pursue to the Regulations for the Extrajudicial Conflict Resolution Procedure.

The right to use an ".es" domain may be transferred in accordance with current regulations. When the trade name or trademark associated with the domain is transferred on a voluntary basis. The owner or a fully authorised represenative of the ".es" domain must send a notification of acceptance of the transfer for the right to use the ".es" domain, along with a photocopy of their identification document.

IEDR, the Irish Registry, states that more than 150,000 active Irish
domain names are now active. One could argue that if the registry was a
little more open there would be a lot more !

.CO registrations have now passed the 600,000 mark. Whilst this is of
course a substantial number in a relatively short space of time, I can't
help but think that they would have expected more, given the quality of
.co as a TLD, and the amount of publicity they had.

Needless to say, we welcome orders for both .ie and .co domains !

So ".tel" allows you to store, publish and update online all your contact information and keywords under your unique domain name, without the need for a website! ".tel" is optimized for mobile devices since it uses small and fast DNS lookups rather than larger html content. It therefore enables you to be quickly and easily found on all mobile devices.

".tel" domain is not a website, you cannot build site on a ".tel" domain name.

Why is ".tel" different than other 300+ Top Level Domains (TLDs)? The value of a ".tel" domain lies with the ability to host personal (or corporate) contact information directly in the DNS, which can then be universally accessible. This stands in contrast to the typical use of the DNS for other TLDs, in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.

What are the restrictions on a ".tel" domain?

• The minimum number of characters in a ".tel" domain is 3

• The maximum number of characters in a ".tel" domain is is 63 (not including the ".tel" suffix.)

• Every domain must contain at least one letter from a-z or "A to Z" in standard US ASCII script.

• No domain can begin or end with a hyphen nor can a domain have a hyphen in the 3rd and 4th position.

• A ".tel" domain may not consist purely of digits.

Due to recent exposure to the domaining community on the web, we're seen
a a high level of interest in country specific .edu and .gov domains over the last week.

It should be noted, that these domains are, in most places, strictly controlled and for academic/government facilities only.

It is highly unlikely that you will be able to register a .gov domain in any country, unless you are in fact a Government agency in that country, and documentary evidence will need to be provided.

Similar conditions apply to .edu domains in most countries, with evidence of eligibility required at the point of registration.

We have, however found that it is possible to register .edu domains in Latvia, ie 'domain'.edu.lv

Please note before rushing to request a domain, that the domains are intended for educational establishments and, if prompted for evidence of this, the onus will be on the registrant to provide this. They'll be accepting applications from midday 1200 GMT on 1 December 2010. You cannot apply before this time.

The release process will be in several phases;

1) Registered Rights Sunrise phase

The Registered Rights Sunrise phase for the release of reserved short domains will open at midday 1200 GMT on 1 December 2010, lasting until midday 1200 GMT on 17 January 2011, and the IP rights validation process will close at midday 1200 GMT on 31 January.

The Registered Rights Sunrise phase is for the holders of registered trade marks enforceable in the UK exactly matching the short domain being made available (excluding the suffix co.uk, org. uk etc)

2) Unregistered Rights Sunrise phase
The Unregistered Rights Sunrise phase is for (i) any person who would have qualified for the first sunrise but missed the application deadline and (ii) the holders of unregistered rights enforceable in the UK exactly matching the short domain being made available and in force as of 1 January 2008 AND who can provide evidence of bona fide use in the UK on or before 1 January 2008, to the satisfaction of an independent IP rights validation assessor.

This phase will be announced early in 2011.

3) Landrush

Following the two sunrises, there will be a period of open application for any domain names not previously registered through the Registered Rights Sunrise or the Unregistered Rights Sunrise.

It should be noted that for any domain where there are multiple requests (and frankly I'm sure that will be for pretty much EVERY 1 and 2 character domain name), Nominet will then hold an auction.
