Background

Managing and assigning the registry of the domain .it for Italy is the ccTLD '.it' Registry. This was developed by IIT-CNR, an abbreviation for the Istituto di Informatica e Telematica of the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche.

Providing service to the Internet Service Providers is the ccTLD .it Registry, needing to sign a contract to be able to register directly unto .it. The role of the Registry is also held by CNR due to their technical and scientific skills in the area, something which was recognised and chosen by the Internet Assigned Naming Authority, also known as IANA.

Various domain names under the ccTLD .it are reserved by the Registry, mostly being names that refer to geographical locations in Italy, for example italy.gov.it is the official domain name for the government and having a name like that which is easy to remember has increased its use. A domain name in the form of .edu.it are for Educational purposes.

Though there is no limits on the amount of domain names one person can register, only those who posses citizenship or live in one of the countries within the European Union can apply. of a .it ccTLD.

When choosing the name of your .it domain name, the following regulations must be met:

  • The maximum length for a .it domain name is 63 characters.
  • The minimum length for a .it domain name is 3 characters. For these two points, it does not include the 'http://www.' or the '.it'.
  • Use of numbers 0-9 is allowed.
  • Characters a-z and ASCII can be used.
  • Hyphens (-) are the only special characters allowed. A domain name cannot begin or end with a hyphen and two hyphens cannot follow after each other.

Once you have received a domain name under .it, it will last the duration of one year. This starts from when it is first registered or when the change of maintainer or registrant happens. An example of this is when a domain name is transfered to BB-Online as a registrar on the 5th of January 2008, it will expire the following year on the 5th January 2009.

Through statistics, it has been shown that 1,708,297 domain names were registered on July 8th, 2009 under the top level domain ".it".

Background

.vg is the Internet country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for the British overseas territory of the Virgin Isles, found to the east of Puerto Rico in the Caribbean. It is operated by AdamsNames, a company who also run the country code domain names for the Turks and Caicos Islands, and Grenada. Though the .vg domain name is intended for residents of the British Virgin Islands, one does not need to be present in the country in order to register under the .vg domain. There is no limit to the amount of domains a registrant may want.

To register with the .vg domain the following criteria must be met:

  • Characters used in the domain must be from the Roman alphabet (a-z).
  • The only digits allowed are from 0-9, including the hyphen (-). However, the hyphen may not be used at the beginning or at the end of the domain.
  • Due to the International Domain Name's (IDN) punycode, a hyphen may not be placed in the third or fourth place of the domain name chosen.

A license for the specific domain name chosen by the registrant, when accepted by AdamsNames, is given, allowing the registrant to use the domain name for a set amount of time. If the contract is breached, AdamsNames have the right to cancel the license. The rules are as follows:

  • The domain name cannot be used to cause confusion with internet users;
  • None of the agreements of the Terms & Conditions are to be broken by the applicant;
  • The domain name chosen cannot endanger the operation of the Top Level domain;

After the decision to cancel a contract is made, AdamsNames will give the applicant a seven day notice.

.tm is the Internet country code top-level domain name (ccTLD) for Turkmenistan

Officially known as the Republic of Turkmenistan, and it is found in Central Asia. The country is bordered by Afghanistan to the south-east, Iran to the south and south-west, Uzbekistan to the east and north-east and Kazakhstan to the north and north-west.

Turkmenistan has a total size in area of 488,100km2, making it the 52nd largest country. It has an estimated population of 5,110,000 people, as the 112th most populous country.

The .tm domain name was introduced in 1997, and it is operated by the Internet Computer Bureau (who run NIC.TM), and sponsored by the TM Domain Registry (NetNames).

Though the domain name's intended use is for entities connected with Turkmenistan, applicants are able to register from any legal jurisdiction, especially as a domain for businesses with trademarks, due to .tm being similar to the trademark symbol. However, for entities who are not a resident of Turkmenistan, only domain names in second-level are available for registration.

Background

.bb is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Barbados. In 1991, the University of Puerto Rico received the delegation for the Barbados top-level domain. In 1996 the delegation was moved from the University to the company Cable and Wireless BET.

In 2001 both Cable and Wireless and the government of Barbados signed a memorandum of understanding. This agreement allowed Cable and wireless to continue administration of the Barbados ccTLD until the government could find a suitable alternative.

The Barbados government subsequently wrote to IANA requesting re-delegation of the domain in April 2007. IANA accepted the proposal and officially changed the delegation from Cable and Wireless to the government's Ministry of Economic Affairs and Development. The Telecoms unit of the government of Barbados has been running the domain since November 2007. The Telecoms unit is running the domain as a "semi-restricted" domain, intending it for use predominantly within the country.

To be eligible to register a Barbados domain name you must be either a resident or legally allowed to live in the country. If you run a company and wish to register a .bb domain, the company must be registered and operating in Barbados.

The domain should consist of no more than twenty-six characters. It may consist of letters a â€" z from the Standard English alphabet and can use figures 0 â€" 9 as well as hyphens.
