Background

.bg is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Bulgaria. The domain was first established in 1995 and is administered by Register.BG.

The .bg domain is only available for registration within Bulgaria and registrations from outside of the country are restricted. The domain is only available to citizens of Bulgaria and companies based and operated within the country. The domain name registered must represent the company name or its abbreviation. To get around this restriction, some Bulgarian companies register the name they wish to use as a trademark. This is common practice as trademarks are eligible to be used as .bg domain names.

Until mid 2006, local companies considered registering a .bg domain very expensive and many opted to use .com, .org and .net domains as a cheaper alternative. The high costs incurred were due to the stringent procedures put in place regarding documentation needed for new registrations.

Register.BG introduced new measures in August 2008 that made the registration process much easier. Without as many regulations and restrictions, the process became a much cheaper and viable option for people wanting to register a Bulgarian domain name.

In September 2006, a variety of new domain names under the .bg top-level were introduced. These domains are primarily aimed at individuals for private use.

Domain names registered this way must only consist of characters found in the Cyrillic alphabet and need to feature at least one character that can be visually distinguished from the Latin alphabet.

Background

The Internet Country Code Top-Level Domain name (ccTLD) for South Korea (Republic of Korea) is .kr. It is managed by the National Internet Development Agency (NIDA) even though registrations are passed through registration agents.

The main roles of NIDA are to establish a customer-oriented service system, receive new demands for .kr domains, manage the .kr domain registrars and provide the necessary support that will guarantee a stable domain name registration service. They also wish to assist the secretariat of the Internet Address Policy Committee, improve management by expanding NIDA's database and to enhance the policies and systems which will lead to more competitive .kr domains.

The domain name .kr can be seen as very attractive due to the claims Korea makes to having the world's best Internet infrastructure.. Due to this, many aspects of Korean society is dictated by the Internet, and incredible 31 million (being 70%) of the population using it. 12 million households, through broadband, are connected to the Internet.

It had been possible, from September 2006, to register a domain name directly beneath .kr, even though it is only possible for internationalised domain names. Trademark holders. Domain names are given out on a 'first come first served' basis.

Available second-level domains under the domain name .kr are as follows:

  • .co.kr : Use by Companies, Organisations and/or Individuals.
  • .go.kr : Use by Korean Governmental Authorities.
  • .ne.kr : Use by Organisations, Companies and/or Individuals which offer a network service on a profit or non-profit basis.
  • .or.kr : Use by Non-profit Companies, Organisations, individuals, associations, foundations, Institutions and/or other incorporated bodies.
  • .pe.kr : For personal use by any Korean Individual.
  • .re.kr : Use by Organisations, Companies and/or Individuals that are conducting Research.

The following terms must be followed before registering for a .kr domain name:

  • Registrants must meet with the criteria necessary when applying for a second-level domain name.
  • Registrants need to have a postal address within Korea.

.dz is the country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Algeria. It is administered by Network Internet Center. DZ, a subdivision of CERIST (Centre de Recherche sur l'Information Scientifique et Technique). To apply for a .dz domain name, one must be an organization with a permanent presence in Algeria, and choose a name of three or more letters. Currently, NIC.DZ charges 1000 Algerian dinars a year (about 14 USD). The two letter country code DZ is derived from Dzayer, the local name for Algeria.

Background

The domain name used in Moldova is .md. The official registrar for the top-level domain name .md is MoldData, a company based in Chisinau, Republic of Moldova. Though the ccTLD .md is based off the country name, it is commonly used for companies or websites related to medicine. This is a simply a marketing exercise.

No residency requirements are need for the .md ccTLD, all names are available on a 'first come, first serve' basis, not including some second level names that are considered as 'Premium Domain Names' and are therefore auctioned off.

If you register a .md domain name, it means that you are agreeing to the Terms and Conditions. The domain name must not be used for any of the following reasons or practices:

  • Display sexual or pornographic content
  • Encourage acts of terrorism
  • Publish derisive information about a third party
  • Sending any unsolicited e-mail, commonly know as 'spam'. Also applied to being associated with this practice

The following criteria must be followed when choosing the name to be used for a .md domain:
  • Only the roman characters 'a-z' and Digits '0-9' can be used.
  • Hyphens (-) are allowed, as long as not used at the start or end of the domain name. Also cannot be on the third and fourth place. his is due to the International domain name's (or IDN) punycode.
  • Moldovan characters allowed are: ă, â, î, ş and ţ

  • Population is estimated to be approx 4,128,047 people

Background

The official registrar who manage the ccTLD .in, India, is INRegistry. They were chosen for this role by the government of India, meaning that they are fit for the job. The INRegistry is administered by NIXI, and abbreviation for the National Internet eXchange of India.

NIXI wasn't always in charge of managing the .in domain names, previously the role was in the hands of C-DAC until December 2005. Yet, it was only until January 2006 that they stopped domain registrations, still keeping the company going until this date even if they were not the official registrars. All cof C-DAC's clients were made to transfer their names to another registrar of their choice.

There are various second level domains that NIXI manage and they will be displayed below. Registrations for these sub domains are available to anyone and no local presence is needed. They are as follows:

  • .in
  • .co.in
  • .net.in
  • .org.in
  • .firm.in
  • .gen.in General
  • .ind.in Individuals

When deciding the name for your .in domain name, the following conditions must be read and met:

  • The minimum characters in the domain name is 3, the maximum 63. This does not include 'http://www.' or '.in'.
  • Any character from the Roman Alphabet (a-z) can be used.
  • Digits 0-9 are allowed.
  • The only special characters that can be used are hyphens (-). The name cannot begin nor end with a hyphen. Hyphens cannot be put in the third or fourth position as it will cause rejection. This is due to the punycode.

Though not currently allowed, it is planned that in the future, IDN registrations will be acceptable. IDN stands for International Domain Name. This means that tamil, hindi and other Indian languages will be possible for use in the domain name. Please wait for the announcement for when these will be allowed.

It is possible to transfer your domain name to a different registrar, yet it must be done after 60 days following the creation of said domain name. The transfer adds a year to the term of the domain name, this being charged to the new registrar.

All one character or two character domain names are reserved for NIXI and are not available for the public.

.ai is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Anguilla. It is administered by the government of Anguilla.

Registrations within off.ai, com.ai, net.ai, and org.ai are available unrestrictedly, worldwide, but don't appear to be getting much use. Until recently, second level registrations within .ai seemed to be available only to residents of Anguilla and are used to some extent for sites based there, but there was no indication on the official registry site of how to register them. However as of 26 June 2006, they are available for anyone to register (according to the registry site at nic.com.ai).
