Background

Responsible for managing the Internet Domain Names Registry for the country code top-level Domain for Jersey (.je) and Guernsey (.gg) is the Channel Islands Internet Domain Name Registry.

When you have registered a domain name, it does not give any legal rights to that name. Any disputes the occur over a particular name can then be settled through normal legal methods. A registration is subject to a person and therefore a reply cannot be given in an instance.

The Channel Islands Internet Domain Name Registry try their best to process all applications with two to three working days. Excluded from this are any domain names that are told to be particularly important. If you contact the registrar and let them know the same day that you have applied, they will try get your application processed quicker. The minimum period for registration of a .je domain name is one year.

There is a list of reserved names that are not to be used for the public. It is kept by the Insular Authorities, also known as the Island's governments. These reserved names are certain words or string patterns to allow future expansion If a name that you have applied for is similar to one of these reserved names, it is possible that the request will be declined.

Terms which must be read when choosing a domain name are as follows:

  • Characters accepted are from the Roman Alphabet (a-z).
  • Digits 0-9 are allowed.
  • The only specialised character allowed is a hyphen (-).
  • The first and last characters cannot be a hyphen as it is currently not offered by the Internationalised domain name (IDN).
  • If you want a domain name consisting of only number or two hyphens, it is not guaranteed that it will be accepted.

As follows are the second-level domain names and are available under the .je ccTLD:

  • .je & .co.je: For Commercial or Personal use.
  • .org.je: For use by Organisations.
  • .net.je: For ISP and Commercial use.
  • .sch.je: For the Guernsey Grid for Learning.
  • .gov.je: For official use by the States of Jersey. Can also be used by Jersey Parishes.

Background

.se is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Sweden.

The top domain is operated by IFF (The Internet Infrastructure Foundation), but domains must be registered through one of the approved registrars. ".se" is a foundation and is managed on the basis of its charter of foundation and its statutes. The Foundation is managed by a Board of Directors, whose decisions are executed by the executive management. In 2006, a new Chairman of the Board, Rune Brandinger, and a new CEO, Danny Aerts, took office.

Prior to April 2003, the rules governing domains under the ".se" top domain were highly restrictive. Only companies, associations and authorities registered nation-wide were allowed to register a domain, and it had to be very similar to the registered name. Individual products were not eligible for separate domain names, even if they were registered trademarks. Individuals could register one (and only one) domain with the suffix ".pp.se" (pp is an abbreviation for "privatperson", "private person"), and companies and organizations registered in just a single county were eligible for domains with a ".se" suffix.

With the new rules, any entity or person may register any number of domains, subject to few restrictions. You may register whatever ".se" domain you want, as long as it is free, not in .se's Blocked or Reserved list. At the same time, the rules for domain name allocation were changed to the principle of first-come, first-served. More simple rules for dispute resolution were also created. As of October 2003, ".se" started accepting registrations of internationalized domain names, containing the letters å, ä, ö è and ü. On 6 September 2007, a total of 250 characters became available, supporting names in all of the legally recognized minority languages of Sweden: Finnish, Tornedalsfinska, Sami, Romany and Yiddish.

".se" is the first TLD to offer DNSSEC services. There are currently around 900.000 active domains in Sweden which means that there is 1 web pages on ever 10 people. A few hundred new web pages gets registered everyday.

Background

The ccTLD ".gs" has been assigned to South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands.

Registrations are possible directly under .gs, at the second level and there are no requirements for a local presence. Registrations are open to anyone on a first-come first-served basis.

The .gs domain is managed by "Atlantis North Ltd.", a member of "CoCCA" ("Council of Country Code Administrators").

.gs domains can be applied for by individuals or companies/organisations. If an individual is applying for a domain name, they must be at least 18 years old.

The registry state that they must be informed immediately if any legal action is either threatened or is instigated in relation to the use of a .gs domain name.

In registering a domain name under .gs, the registrant agrees to use the .gs Domain name in good faith, and in accordance with the laws of applicable United Kingdom legislation or LTD policy, international law, and applicable state laws and regulations, and will not use the .gs Domain name in any way which may violate a subsisting right of "Atlantis North Ltd." (the .gs registry) or any third party.

Registering mis-spellings of well known trademarks, brand names or company names with a view to gaining traffic from visitors to the correctly spelt names is strictly forbidden by the registy. For example, you can not register "milennium-motorvehicles.gs" in order to gain traffic from people visiting the correctly spelt "millennium-motorvehicles.gs".

Registering .gs domain names in order to sell them to owners of intellectual property is also forbidden, such as registering a domain name which matches a well known trademark or company/trading name.

You can not feature, or link to, any indecent, obscene, or pornographic material at/from a .gs domain name, nor link to or feature information on how to prepare and/or use illegal drugs, commit crime or acts of violence.

If a .gs domain name is used for "cracking " or "hacking ", or any related activities such as (but not limited to):

  • port scans
  • ping floods
  • packet spoofing
  • forged routing information
  • deliberate attempts to overload a service, and attempts to "crash" host
this is considered a breach of the registration agreement(s) and the domain name will be suspended or cancelled with no refunds being given.

If a .gs domain name is used to sell goods or services, the registry state:

A User using a .gs Domain to sell goods or services over the Internet must provide clear links with sufficient and accurate contact details on such website so that consumers have the ability to contact the seller of such goods or services, and so that customers and prospective customers are clearly advised of any territorial limitations on the offer, sale or provision of any goods or services offered, sold or provided, and of any applicable laws, jurisdiction or CoCCA recommendations. In the event that it is credibly alleged that a .gs Domain name registrant has not followed such laws, ANL will furnish the contact details for the registrant in accordance with the ANL Privacy Policy.

The registry also forbid users of a .gs domain name from sending spam, phishing emails or any fraudulent "Make Money Fast" or "Pyramid Selling" schemes.

  • Population is estimated to be approx 20 people (mainly scientific support staff)
  • Gross Domestic Product is not applicable
  • Languages recognised in South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands are English

Background

.sg is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Singapore.

It is administered by the Singapore Network Information Centre (SGNIC) and registrations are processed via accredited registrars.

SGNIC was formed in October 1995 and a month later SGNIC took over the operation of Domain Name Registration (DNR) Services from the Technet Unit upon its acquisition by Sembawang Media. The main purpose of SGNIC is administering the Internet domain name space in Singapore as well as to provide a forum for the local Internet Service Providers however it wasnt until 1997, the acutal operations were housed and operated by SGNIC. Before then it was the New Media & Internet Cluster (NMI) of the Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA) that was in charge. SGNIC was in 1997 registered as a company in ACRA.

SGNIC goals are to:

• To facilitate the use of the Internet by administering the registration of ".sg" domain names in a logical and coherent framework;

• To provide a forum for Internet access service providers, regulatory agencies and interest groups to discuss issues related to the coordination and administration of Internet infrastructure and services in Singapore;

• To raise the competency of the Internet industry in Singapore by acquiring and sharing knowledge and best practices; and

• To provide, where appropriate, advice and feedback on issues pertinent to the Internet industry.

The ".sg" domain name is open for everone that has a valid Singapore postal address. A foreign applicant can apply for a domain name if the administrative contact has a valid Singapore postal adress. However there are numerous subdomains under the ccTLD ".sg". Currently the following 2LDs are offered by SGNIC:

".com.sg" is for commercial entities that are either registered with the ACRA, IE Singapore or any professional body. A foreign company may apply for this domain name if it has a representative in Singapore, which shall be a legal entity that is similarly registered by any of the afore-mentioned organisations.

".net.sg" is for network providers and info-comm operators in Singapore. In order to apply the applicant needs to posses a valid licence issued by the Info-Communications Development Authority (IDA).

".org.sg" is for organisations registered with the Registry of Societies (ROS) including other miscellaneous organisations (eg. Town Councils, Community Centres, People's Association and Embassies and any other organisations not classified elsewhere.)

".gov.sg" is for all government organizations within the Singapore Government, this includes Ministries, Organs of State, and Statutory Boards.

".edu.sg" is for educational institutions. Applicants for domain names under this category must be educational institutions registered with the Ministry of Education (MOE).

".per.sg" is for the registration of personal domain names.

Since the 22 of October, 2007 SGNIC offers pure numeric domain names.

SGNIC system operates on a first-come first-served basis. So the first application request will obtain the name. This is provided that the request meets the domain name requirements stated in the SGNIC agreement.

Background

.ki is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) for Kiribati.

From the early 1990s to the early 2000s the domain was managed on behalf of the Republic of Kiribati by an Australian ISP, Connect.com.au with the Forum Fisheries Agency, based in Honiara, Solomon Islands as original sponsor, then transferred to theMinistry of Fisheries and Marine Resources Development of Kiribati and finally to the Ministry of Communications, Transport, and Tourism Development. In 2002 direct management of the ccTLD was transferred to Telecom Services Kiribati Limited. This initial set up was done by Franck Martin. As of 2007, the registry is being handled by the Telecommunications Authority of Kiribati using a system of mltiple registrars similar to that used by gTLDs; however, few sites are active using .ki domains. Because of the location of Kiribati and limited Internet connection, it is not uncommon for a website in Kiribati, such as a government website, to be very slow or inaccessible, however a lot of .ki sites are hosted outside Kiribati.
