Background

The global registry appointed by ICANN for the .mobi domain name is dotMobi. It is used for people who want to enable internet service through their mobile phones. It makes sure that the site will work and doesn't give the same problems on mobile phones that other domain names might.

Even though the mobile market is increasing, the Mobile Web is still very difficult to use. It can be hard to locate certain sites and very little content can show up. These problems are erased with use of the .mobi domain name, opening an easier path for content providers. It means that you will need to rely less on operator portals.

It guarantees a better user experience which results in customer loyalty, .mobi increasing the use of profitable data services. IT gives users an easier way the access the internet and websites that they enjoy, a mobile being more accessible from various locations rather than a laptop.

Yet, why does it work with all phones? This is due to the 'Instant Mobilizer'. It takes an existing website and transforms it into a mobile site. No programming is involved which makes it easier for anyone to get hold of a .mobi site.

dotMobi, also known as mTLD ltd., has reserved a number of domains which are usually common words or phrases. This procedure is done along with dotMobi's contract with ICANN. The reason for these so called 'Premium names' is so that you can preserve the stability and exurity of registry operations, make it more likely that these names will provide the mobile web community with more exciting features and services, and so that in the allocation of these names, there is a more level playing field.

Excluding these 'Premium names', dotMobi works on a 'first come, first serve' basis, much like other domain names. These domain names must follow the required dotMobi criteria.

These are the regulations which must be met when creating a .mobi domain name:

  • The maximum characters allowed in a .mobi domain name is 63, the minimum being 3. This excludes the 'http://www' and '.mobi'.
  • All numbers 0-9 can be used, along with the roman alphabet a-z and ASCII.
  • Hyphens (-) can be used but two cannot follow after each other.
  • Spaces and special characters such as !, $, etc. cannot be used.
  • In the future it is planned that dotMobi will support IDNs which means Internationalised Domain names. This is not yet possible.

.dm is the country code top-level domain for Dominica.

The ccTLD for Dominica, meaning the Country Code Top-Level Domain, is .dm. It is administrated and managed by the DotDM Corporation and is sponsored by the University of Puerto Rico. The domain name .dm first appeared in the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica in 1997, all due to the Domini Corporation. This was due to the increased use of the Internet which led to a high demand for Domain names. It was set to benefit the nation in both a social and an economic level.

A local presence is not needed to register a .dm Domain name, this meaning that it would be useful for those living in places such as Europe and North America. It makes good use for Travel and Tourism and International Businesses.

Not too long in the past on February 2nd, 2001, two groups signed a Domain Name Services Agreement. These were the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica and the DotDM Corporation. It offers great economic opportunities and this is why it is important that all countries are allow to obtain a .dm domain name. It can open the eyes of people to this wonderful country.

Though not heavily used, there are no restrictions placed on who can register third-level Domain Names. These can be used to make the name more specific to its job. Examples of these can be net.dm and org.dm, yet these along with .com.dm can be automatically included.

The ccTLD, meaning Internet country code top-level domain, for Luxembourg is .lu and is administered by Restena who take responsibility for management. This domain name was given to Restena as the main registrar in 1992 by IANA. It is a national network for education and research of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

Background

In charge of maintaining the ccTLD of Greece (.gr) is The Registry of .gr Domain names. They are a department of the Institute of Computer Science of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas. They received this role thanks to EETT. This ccTLD was registered in 1987 by FORTH-ICS, their expertise helping create a newer and better infrastructure throughout the years.

Though having been around for a long time, it was only since 2005 that it was possible for domain names to contain Greek Characters, known as IDN's. It doesn't need any special plug-ins to seen these IDN domain names in newer browsers, and companies like Windows are working hard to make sure all their Internet Explorers accept them. Domain names which consist of alpha arithmetic characters which match lower/ upper case, unpunctuated or punctuated are called by the name of Homograph. These can be shown in the following examples: "eett.gr" and "εεττ.gr" appear equal, similar with capital letters "EETT.gr" and "ΕΕΤΤ.gr". Whether you want to allow homographs or not is up to the registrant of the domain names, and it is also up to them which homographs are activated. A fee must be paid for these homographs.

To register a .gr ccTLD, the following must happen:

  • After the application is submitted, the domain name is checked by the .gr registry. Once this has happened, it will be active within three hours. It is temporary and does not give any rights over the name.
  • EETT finally examines the applications within twenty days. From here they can either reject or accept it.

To keep the domain names much more organised, sub-domains are available:

  • com.gr: - For Commercial use
  • edu.gr: For Educational use
  • net.gr: For the use of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and network providers
  • org.gr: For non-profit organisations
  • gov.gr: For Government use, no exceptions.

Background

.aero (aeroplane) is a generic top-level domain (gTLD) used on the Internet's Domain Name System. It is the first gTLD based on a single industry, and is reserved for aviation-related businesses. It was created in 2002 and is operated by SITA. There is also a Dot Aero Council created and controlled by SITA.

The .aero domain is reserved for companies, organizations, associations, government agencies, and individuals in aviation and related industries.

As such, just like .com one can register any site under .aero, as long as one states at registration time for the .aero ID that one has something to do with aviation.

Currently, two-letter codes under .aero are reserved for airlines according to the IATA Airline Designators, while three-letter codes are reserved for airports, according to the IATA airport codes.

Registrations are processed via accredited registrars.

The .aero domain name was appr! oved for a 5-year term expiring December 17, 2006 as part of a "proof of concept" of new TLD's. SITA has applied for renewal of this agreement.
